have a wood/coal/anything burning car for your time. So I was up at the new house this weekend that we got for my dad and stepmom to retire in. There is a huge fireplace with an extra flue that was once used likely for a wood burning cook stove that faces the kitchen. There is nothing there but an empty thimble going into the flue. The fireplace faces into the living room, not the kitchen. Floor is uprated under there to handle some serious weight. There are 3 options I foresee. I have access to a Princess Atlantic wood cook stove, I could build a pizza/bread oven, or I could put a big potbelly wood stove in there. My pops just wants the heat, but would use a pizza oven or wood cook stove if it was there. What do you think I should do? Here is the cook stove I could install (needs some welding on the top, sorry no full pics), or an example of the pizza oven I could build. I have at least 2 years to whip this place into shape, so time/cost is not prohibitive. Pizza oven would throw the least heat, then cook stove, then potbelly stove being the best. Place was built in the 70's, and we are uprating the insulation which is already pretty decent. He will be in Cali most of the winter too. Heat is forced hot air. Access to plenty of wood

I'd totally go with the cook stove. I was always jealous of the people I knew who had a functional wood burning cook stove, I don't know about the princess Atlantic particularly, but that really seems like the way to go for versatility with perhaps slightly higher maintenance than a non-cooking-wood-stove. I love the ability to bake something anytime you have a fire going... or to just put a kettle on and get boiling water... sure sure, modern instant-on stoves and all that... As a kid we had to light the gas burners (even the oven) with a match (the pilot light on the stove was screwed... we got a new one with electric ignition eventually, but that stuff sticks with you...) and we heated with wood, as I said, always jealous of the people who had wood-burning cook stoves. I still want one.

ha my 49 Chamber 90C gas cook stove is match light. I love it personally, but I think I agree with you. I wish I was a better welder so I can get that top fixed properly, but I do have free access to it. And Princess Atlantic was made in Maine, so there are a ton around for parts.

Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should do it. Americans achilles heal. I also think a pizza oven in central living areas could compromise the dynamic of the space. If I'm looking for a nice place to melt into the couch, I'd rather it be in front of a traditional wood stove, instead of a pizza oven. It's kind of off-putting if you're not using it to, you know, cook pizza, aesthetically speaking.

Another random thought.. future resale value of the home.. "what a lovely family room.. it's so cozy and quaint.. I really love the.. wait.. the fuck? Is that a pizza oven?" "What kind of crazed pizza lunatic wants to dilute his living area with purpose built utilities? No thank you!"

well, there is a fireplace on the living area side, this is for one corner of the kitchen, on the back side of the fireplace. Can't even see it from the living space. I wanted to open up the other side and have a 2 sided fireplace to heat the kitchen, but I dont want to pull apart known good brickwork there.

not sure if you are on G+, but there is a good group some of us use called Oppo House. They may give you a bit more of a focused response.

Do the wood stove. I love those old fashioned stoves. Never really used one though. Although my uncle had one in his old farm house.

Cooking one that is.

Wood stoves are awesome. Just be sure to clean the flue, and keep the door closed. Got a free wood stove from a place that left the door opened and burned. down.
